Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg (FAU) is a public research university located in the German cities of Erlangen and Nuremberg. Friedrich-Alexander University was named after Friedrich, Margrave of Brandenburg-Bayreuth, and Alexander, Margrave of Brandenburg-Ansbach, the university's first founders. FAU is the state university of Bavaria's second largest. It has 5 faculties, 24 departments, 25 clinical departments, 21 autonomous departments, 579 professors, 3,457 research staff members, and approximately 14,300 employees. In the winter semester 2018/19, approximately 38,771 students (including 5,096 foreign students) enrolled in 265 fields of study at the university, with approximately two-thirds studying at the Erlangen campus and the remaining one-third at the Nuremberg campus. According to these figures, FAU is among the top ten largest universities in Germany. FAU's Faculty of Engineering is a new educational and research institution. Since its inception in 1966. Electrical, Electronic and Communication Engineering, Chemical and Biological Engineering, Materials Science and Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, and Computer Science Engineering are the five departments within the Faculty. The Faculty has strong ties to both other natural sciences and traditional university subjects. The Faculty of Engineering now focuses on research areas such as New Materials and Processes, Life Science Engineering and Medicine Technology, Energy Technology and Mobility, Modelling and Simulation, Optics and Optical Technologies, and Information- and Communication Technologies. According to the QS World University Rankings 2018, FAU is the academic institution with the most widely cited publications in Germany (global 21st). According to the 2019 Reuters ranking report, FAU is the most innovative university in Germany and the second most innovative university in Europe. FAU was ranked second among German universities in the Engineering/Technology and Computer Sciences group in the 2014 Academic Ranking of World Universities.
