The University of Göttingen is an internationally renowned public research university with a long tradition. Founded in 1737 in the Age of Enlightenment. It has a strong sense of commitment to the principles of science's social duty, democracy, tolerance, and fairness. It was the first comprehensive university in Germany to be placed under a public law foundation's sponsorship in 2003.
It has 13 faculties and offers a wide variety of courses in the arts, social sciences, and scientific sciences, as well as in medicine. The University of Göttingen is dedicated to upholding the highest standards of quality in research and instruction, with 535 professors and more than 4,000 research associates. 22,833 students are enrolled there, including 920 freshmen and 4,353 graduates.

Since many years, the University of Göttingen has participated in a number of Virtual Exchange initiatives and views them as a beneficial, forward-looking extension of the university's international operations.
Through initiatives that are both synchronous and asynchronous, Virtual Exchange enables students and teachers to collaborate online across national boundaries and to research global issues. By doing this, one can gain new perspectives on themselves and their own fields of study in addition to developing their intercultural competence.
