The university was founded in 1962. Applied Physics and Process Engineering, Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, Automotive and Mechatronics Engineering, Mechanical Engineering and Business & Technology Management, as well as Social Work and Healthcare Management, are among the advanced fields that the university tracks.

The University of Siegen is a public research university with its headquarters in Siegen, North Rhine-Westphalia. It is a member of the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft, an association of Germany's top research universities. 1972 saw the founding of the university.

The Weidenau neighborhood on Siegen's northeastern side is home to the majority of the university buildings. The Adolf-Reichwein-Straße campus in Haardter Berg has amenities like the largest lecture rooms, the central canteen, the central library, as well as a portion of the center for information and media technology.

It has 5 faculties, 51 study courses, a unique study concept in the School of Arts and Humanities with three study models, as well as 9 lecture courses (after school forms, Bachelor / Master), broken down into 138 part-study courses, and 17,659 students (winter term 2021/2022) and 3,495 Freshmen (2021/2022).

It has 23 Scientific Centres, having  257 centres Professors, 1,167 Scientific researchers, Technical and administrative staff is 854 in numbers. It also has 161 ERASMUS-Cooperations and 2,279 foreign students from more than 100 countries.

The University of Siegen offers 126 degree programs overall throughout its four faculties:

•        Science and Technology

There are several student clubs and organizations, including the student-run radio station Radius 92.1 and the student television show Campus TV. Every semester, the International Office provides a Welcome week where international students are assisted with their first steps in Siegen (walking through the city, opening a bank account, registration for medical insurance, etc.). Offerings over the semester include high ropes courses, intercultural training, and tours to adjacent cities.
