Informatics for the Natural Sciences

The Master degree program data science Due to the constant increase in data volumes and data complexity  Data Science has created a new  interdisciplinary field of work that covers a wide range of aspects of data analysis  such as handling large amounts of data  statistical modelling  visualisation  pattern recognition with machine learning methods  but also ethical and legal questions. Data Scientists are urgently needed for many socially significant developments  e.g. in the areas of intelligent vehicles or housing  artificial intelligence or social media.

The extraction of information from data is a genuinely interdisciplinary undertaking: The data collection and the communication of the results of the analyses require a link to the domain from which the data originate. The processing and analysis of the data requires an interaction of computer algorithms with statistical methods.

Data Science

The aim of the Master program is to provide in-depth knowledge and skills acquired in the Bachelor program for the development and implementation of cognitive  information-processing systems  with particular reference to current scientific knowledge. In addition  the students are increasingly instructed to work independently according to the scientific principles of cognitive computer science.

Intelligent Systems

The Master program genome based system technology course gives access to a new interdisciplinary research field  systems biology  where molecular life science and modern physico-chemical techniques and mathematical-bioinformatic methods synergize.Systems biology comprises a lot of disciplines. In this field biology joins forces with e.g. bioinformatics  mathematics and physics. The common target is to understand the functionality of cells  organs or even complete organisms.
With a Master degree in "Genome Based Systems Biology" you can e.g. work on biotechnological projects  study diseases or investigate alternative forms of energy. You are well prepared for a career as well in science as in economy.
This research oriented Master course  with less than 18 students per academic year  enables an intensive supervision and sufficient time to learn the use of complex instruments and evaluate and analyze complex data.
This interdisciplinary Master course follows the tradition of Bielefeld University - communication and cooperation are therefore deeply embedded.Aim of systems biology is to establish computer-based models of processes in the living cell allowing to predict the performance of metabolic pathways  cells  organs or whole organisms under certain conditions.

All courses and lectures are given either in German or in English. Therefore German as well as English language skills are prerequisite.



Genome Based Systems Biology

The Master of Arts degree in Sociology offers well-founded theoretical and methodological training and enables specialization opportunities in different areas. The overarching goal of the study program is to impart extensive theoretical and methodological knowledge to the students in the theory and method seminars as well as in all offered areas of general and special sociology. The special feature of the MA Sociology in Bielefeld is that the students are given maximum freedom of choice at the largest sociological institution in the country. In addition to an introduction and a final module  you can choose depending on your individual focus - and this during the course of your studies  not at the beginning.

The International Track is the English-language branch of the German-language Master programme. Accordingly  M.A. Sociology students can combine English- and German-language courses or complete the entire Master programme in English.

It is mandatory to do an internship. It is easier to find internship when it is mandatory. 3-6 months is most common.

Sociology International track

The interdisciplinary Master program "History  Economics and Philosophy of Science / Interdisciplinary Studies of Science" (ISoS) focuses on science-reflective studies and is aimed at working out essential characteristics of science and making them explicit. The goal is the analysis of scientific knowledge  Its economic structure and Its integration into the social context in the past and present. The course is aimed on the one hand at bachelor’s graduates in the three basic disciplines of history  economics and philosophy  and on the other hand at graduates from the natural and social sciences who are aiming for a science-reflective deepening of their studies. The training in the ISoS course qualifies the students for independent research work in the field of science research  but at the same time is aimed at imparting important skills for working in various institutions of science administration and science management. 

Proof of language skills in English and/or German. Sufficient language skills are proven by a relevant academic degree from either a German- or an English-language institution. Sufficient language skills can also be proven by English at the CEFR level of B2 and a level of German of B2. If  at the date of application  no German language skills can be proven  a level of C1 in English is requisite for admission; in that case  skills of German at the level of B1 need to be earned during the programme and proven upon receiving the degree

Advanced Optical Technologies

ASC stands for Advanced Signal Processing and Communications Engineering  and it is a new Master programme for students who want to specialize in this field.

The ASC programme is designed for students with Bachelor degree focusing on information and communication technology. Its diploma is recognized internationally and meets the requirements for subsequent doctoral studies. The four-semester curriculum starts in winter. All courses are taught in English and do not require prior knowledge in German language.

The program emphasizes on fundamental concepts of modern technologies in the areas of signal processing and communications. The Master Program Public Focus on Health Ageing populations  the rising burden of non-communicable diseases and obesity  failing health systems  socially determined health disparities  climate change and newly emerging infectious diseases are just a few of the challenges confronting population health and well-being in both developing and developed countries.Well-trained public health professionals who can identify  understand and respond to these challenges by integrating scientific knowledge  evidence-based practice  empirical research and implementation skills are needed to design and improve public health policies and practice at regional  national and global levels. The Master of Public Health course aims to equip you with the awareness  knowledge and skills required to change the trajectory of these deep-rooted and emerging health issues.

Obtaining your VPD (for international students):
On behalf of HAW Hamburg  the organisation uni assist checks whether your school and university certificates qualify you to study at HAW Hamburg. It then issues a document called a VPD (Vorprüfungsdokumentation) with the result and a grade converted to the German system.
Please follow these steps to obtain your VPD from uni assist well before the deadline for applying to HAW Hamburg: 
Register and create an account.
Search Study Offers – Hochschule für Angewandte Wissenschaften  Hamburg – Master – alle Fächer.
Complete the uni assist application  following the procedure outlined.
You will receive the result within four to six weeks. If your qualification is accepted  uni assist will issue you a VPD.
Upload this document together with the other requested documents to the HAW Hamburg application portal.

Please complete the online application form and upload all the necessary documents as PDF files to complete your application to HAW Hamburg. You DO NOT have to print off the application and send the documents by post.

International applicants should inform themselves about the admission requirements  course of studies  and acceptance of foreign documents and certificates well in Advanced of coming to Germany  ideally as early as eight months to one year before the intended start of the degree course.

Public Health

The information engineering focus on complex systems that process various kinds of information can be found in many business and industrial sectors. The financial management focuses on the basic models of the capital market theory, financial institutions and financial instruments as well as the theory and practice of capital markets. This also includes the link between risk and return on money investments and forms the basis for further topics, such as corporate finance or strategic management in banking and finance. You will learn to navigate safely throughout these subjects. This is the ideal preparation for starting your career in the financial sector.

In order to commence your studies with us, you must first successfully complete our selection process. The interviews take place regularly and are carried out via Skype.

Financial Management (B.A.)

CBS International Business School

The Marketing Management studies at CBS will teach you marketing from the ground up. From classic advertising to social media to digital marketing strategies. But these are only a few aspects – marketing managers today also need to Master customer loyalty, procurement marketing, and personnel marketing.

Alternatively, you can furnish proof by taking the CBS language test within an interview (via skype) with our English Department. Also, you can substitute the required language test if you provide evidence of a six month stay abroad in an English-speaking country or if you prove parts of studies in English (examination of individual case)

IB – Marketing Management (B.A.)

Business Psychology is the practice of understanding and improving working life. It combines an understanding of the science of human behaviour with experience of the world of work to gain effective and sustainable performance for both individuals and organisations. The economy is one of the largest employers of business psychologists. With their specialist knowledge of psychological and economic interrelationships, they play a major role in helping companies to better understand their customers and employees, and in establishing a good working atmosphere. As a Bachelor student of "Business Psychology” at the CBS International Business School, you will acquire the basis of business administration and economics, strategic management, and psychology. After graduating in Business Psychology, you can take on higher management positions in marketing, management consulting, or human resources departments.
