Informatics for the Natural Sciences

The Master degree program data science Due to the constant increase in data volumes and data complexity  Data Science has created a new  interdisciplinary field of work that covers a wide range of aspects of data analysis  such as handling large amounts of data  statistical modelling  visualisation  pattern recognition with machine learning methods  but also ethical and legal questions. Data Scientists are urgently needed for many socially significant developments  e.g. in the areas of intelligent vehicles or housing  artificial intelligence or social media.

The extraction of information from data is a genuinely interdisciplinary undertaking: The data collection and the communication of the results of the analyses require a link to the domain from which the data originate. The processing and analysis of the data requires an interaction of computer algorithms with statistical methods.

Data Science

The Master of Arts degree in Sociology offers well-founded theoretical and methodological training and enables specialization opportunities in different areas. The overarching goal of the study program is to impart extensive theoretical and methodological knowledge to the students in the theory and method seminars as well as in all offered areas of general and special sociology. The special feature of the MA Sociology in Bielefeld is that the students are given maximum freedom of choice at the largest sociological institution in the country. The interdisciplinary Master program "History  Economics and Philosophy of Science / Interdisciplinary Studies of Science" (ISoS) focuses on science-reflective studies and is aimed at working out essential characteristics of science and making them explicit. The goal is the analysis of scientific knowledge  Its economic structure and Its integration into the social context in the past and present. Sufficient language skills can also be proven by English at the CEFR level of B2 and a level of German of B2. If  at the date of application  no German language skills can be proven  a level of C1 in English is requisite for admission; in that case  skills of German at the level of B1 need to be earned during the programme and proven upon receiving the degree

History  Economics and Philosophy of Science 

The aim of the Master programme Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering is to enable you to work independently as an engineer in a prominent position in the maritime industry. ASC stands for Advanced Signal Processing and Communications Engineering  and it is a new Master programme for students who want to specialize in this field.

The ASC programme is designed for students with Bachelor degree focusing on information and communication technology. The Master of Finance is a programme for recent graduates or young professionals aspiring to be finance experts. To ensure that the program meets the needs of all our students, two first semester tracks have been created: "Finance Immersion" and "Business" tracks.

The Business Track is designed to allow students with academic backgrounds in Finance, to enter a first semester that allows for the combination of diverse topic coverage while ensuring a solid foundation of core competencies required throughout the programme.

The Finance Immersion Track follows the traditional Master of Finance curriculum. This track will allow students from non-finance, but quantitative academic backgrounds, to develop essential finance and business competencies through the combination of academic lectures and practical tutorial sessions

The program provides the essential needed to become professional documentary filmmakers, documentary photographers and experts for virtual environments and immersive video.Students develop innovative perspectives with the potential to lead the future of digital anthropology in science, virtual platforms, TV broadcasts, museums, online news platforms, cultural institutions, film festivals, galleries, governmental and non-governmental organizations.The program also equips students with knowledge about the ethical correct production of classical, scientistic, immersive and artistic audio-visual media for the representation of national, and transnational cultures, with a focus on Asian, African, European, North American and Latin American “native” or “indigenous” communities. The program includes classes about the Theory and History of Ethnographic Film, Documentary Photography, Digital Anthropology, Camera, Sound, and Editing classes, Social Media Activism and Marketing, Qualitative Ethnographic Methods, Decolonization of the Image, Migration, Extremism and conflict Research, Virtual Environments and building in VR, Gender, feminist and queer theory, Environmental Anthropology, Climate Change and Visual Culture.

Fluent proficiency in English (both written and spoken) is a must, but a certificate is not required

Visual and Media Anthropology (Online)

The Master program M.Sc. Business Psychology is aimed at graduates of psychology programs and is also open to lateral entrants from social and economic science fields of study (details under admission requirements). The program provides in-depth knowledge of business psychology, which is becoming increasingly important in a market characterized by fierce competition for economic resources, personal attention or professional talent.

The Master program M.Sc. Business Psychology can be studied at Campus Berlin and Campus Frankfurt Main in English (M.Sc. Business Psychology) and at HMKW Cologne bilingually in German and English.

Regardless of the working language of the respective program, Master theses at HMKW can generally be written in German or English. For examinations, this rule applied only by individual agreement and requires the consent of the lecturer of the respective module.

Bachelor in Nautical and Maritime Transport is very varied and practical course also due to the mandatory practical semester. Students will be prepared for all eventualities that can happen on board a ship and in dealing with own shipping company. Ecological, engineering, logistical and safety-related issues play a major role in seafaring. The annual training trip on a sailing schooner, as well as the practical semesters on board, round off the practical part of the course and deepen the nautical knowledge.
