Study of philosophy is systematic: philosophy is concerned primarily with addressing and examining philosophical questions, and only secondarily with the history of philosophical thought, analytical: philosophy is bound by the constraints of logic and by the ideals of clarity and rigour. Students can choose to study only at Saarland University or to conduct some of their studies at universities in neighbouring countries such as in Nancy (France) or in Luxembourg, or pursue a full study-abroad semester.

Entry Requirements

Minimum requirement includes a Bachelor or equivalent university degree in philosophy (major or minor) or a related degree. With appropriate previous knowledge of philosophy, access is also possible with a degree in other subject. This previous knowledge can also only be acquired at the beginning of the Master program.

In addition, the special suitability for the Master degree is required, which can usually be determined on the basis of the extraordinary achievements made in the previous academic career and a selection interview with lecturers of the subject.

Furthermore, the following qualifications are required: When studying in the core area: Good previous knowledge in several main areas of philosophy (practical philosophy, philosophy of language and logic, epistemology, history of philosophy, philosophy of mind).

For minor studies: Good previous knowledge in one of these main areas.
