Public Art and New Artistic Strategies

The course includes lectures on more general approaches to integrated urban development and urban sustainability  but also takes a closer look at urban resilience in the context of climate-sensitive planning by analysing urban heat islands and different buildings typologies and urban patterns. Part of the programme is GIS training and application in order to map such heat islands of informal and formal housing areas  using a practical  illustrative case study. The Media Architecture study programme offers in the first instance a well-grounded further education qualification for contemporary media- and architecture-related vocations. At the same time it provides a place of experimentation  a kind of laboratory or meeting place for areas of joint research and new fields of work whose forms of expression transcend disciplinary boundaries. The program Urban design revitalization historic cities districts focus of development of historic cities in Europe and in the MENA region is until today one of the most important challenges for sustainable urban development. A vivid inner city with a historic core shapes the image and the identity of the city and is the catalyst for developments in the whole town. The benefit of renewal and revitalization of inner city areas is never reduced just to the inhabitants and stakeholders of a certain quarter  but extends into surrounding areas and to the town as a whole. Accordingly  in urban development nothing is more sustainable than a vital inner city. This thesis is correct for both shrinking cities in Germany and metropolitan areas in the MENA region. Students acquire fundamental and practice oriented knowledge of economic sciences, e.g. in marketing, finance, economics, or business taxation, and all of this in an international and global context.
