Note: Applicants have the option to study for an additional one semester in one of the partner universities and acquire a dual degree. This means that you will receive a second Master degree from one of our partner universities abroad.

The English-language North American Studies Master program deals with the complex literature and cultures of North American, particularly the USA and Canada, but also the Caribbean and Latin American, and performs interdisciplinary teaching and research work. Central investigative aspects are the multifaceted interculturalism of the respective countries, which are analyzed using newly developed, transnational and cross-border methods and disciplines, among others. The program qualifies graduates for working in research and teaching in the field of North American literature and cultural studies, in editorial professions (journalism, publishing), mediation roles in the intercultural field (language, cultural mediation), professions in administrative services, work in foreign service (EU, UN, embassies) and in international corporations (public relations, management). 

It is mandatory to do an internship. It is easier to find internship when it is mandatory. 3-6 months is most common.

The Semester contributions totalling 354.17 EUR must be paid each semester. It includes Student union fee 90.50 EUR, Student Body fee 14.00 EUR, Semester ticket fee 199.67 EUR and Administrative fee 50 EUR

Cambridge CAE and FCE, UNIcert III, Cambridge IGCSE with level C1, are accepted proof of language proficiency

North American Studies

Philipps-Universität Marburg

The teaching degree program English includes the study of the language, literature and culture of English-speaking countries. Students receive a solid overview of both classical and modern English-language literature and culture and also explore current topics from the areas of structural and applied linguistics. Teaching at vocational schools involves teaching at a German public school, candidates must follow up their Bachelor degree with a Master of Education degree program as well as practical teacher training.

The Semester contributions totaling 320.11 EUR must be paid each semester. No official language certificates (IELTS, CAE, TOEFL) are required for studying English studies. However, a very good knowledge of English (example seven years of schooling) and knowledge of a second modern foreign language are recommended

Euroculture is a Master programme that offers specialized knowledge and methodological and social competence which help students to work in a problem- and project-oriented way even beyond the usual subject-specific limitations, and to present the results in an adequate manner. The program supports students in familiarizing with the methodology of interdisciplinary research and offers in-depth understanding of political, sociological, historical, or cultural-scientific point of view.  This program is unique because it offers a joint, integrated programme run in a Consortium of twelve renown universities on four continents. 

The Semester contributions totalling 350.48 EUR must be paid each semester. It includes Administrative fee 75.00 EUR, Students body Contribution fee 14.00 EUR, Train semester ticket fee 92.44 EUR, Bus Semester ticket fee 50.90 EUR, Culture semester ticket fee 11.14 EUR and Student union fee 107.00 EUR

Native speakers, Students who have studied at least one year full-time in an English-taught university programme, Students who completed an entire Bachelor programme in English are exempt from providing proof of language proficiency

The Master in Social and Cultural Anthropology is an international research-oriented study program. It provides in-depth knowledge of the social and cultural variation in the world, and teaches students an understanding of the similarities between social systems and human relationships. This courses aim to create an understanding of the interrelationships between different aspects of society and therefore cover a wide range of topics such as religion, migration and integration, economic and political organization, health and illness, ritual and performance, violence and memory, patterns of exchange, kinship and solidarity, and socio-cultural diversity.

Ethnologie/Social and Cultural Anthropology

The Bachelor programme in English Studies: British and American Studies deal with the knowledge fields of language, literature and culture on a broad basis. The program is designed to enable students, as future teachers, to train their students up to the Abitur. Students deal with both British and North American linguistic, cultural and literary forms and thus acquire not only text and media analytical skills, but also intercultural and interdisciplinary skills. Career prospects include cultural institutions such as museums or archives, in adult education, as well as in municipal institutions or private companies in public relations, communication or media analysis.
