Data Science has become a revolutionary technology that everyone seems to talk about. It is becoming a key concept for large private businesses, public institutions and research. Data science deals with the methods and tools needed to analyze data and draw actionable conclusions from the results gained in the process. These methods and tools, which cover big data and their analysis, data modeling, machine learning, and simulation methods, are located mainly at the intersection of three subjects: computer sciences, mathematics, and statistics. Consequently, this Master program at Friedrich-Alexander University is jointly taught by lecturers from these three fields.

Internship is not mandatory, but is optional during studies. If possible, we recommend doing an internship.

The semester fee of 117.50 EUR consist of Student Service fee and the contribution for the semester ticket

Data Science

In the degree program, students work strongly application-oriented and system-oriented. They learn to think in an interdisciplinary way in larger system contexts and to design, specify, design, test and accept systems within a frequently larger international team. These include, the development of new defense and security systems, taking into account specific requirements, such as operability, special material and system properties such as security against eavesdropping or disruptibility, but also extreme climatic conditions, interoperability or robustness. The focus of the work is the interaction of individual components and modules to a holistic system or subsystem for military use or to improve civil security.

Computational Science and Engineering (CSE) combines applied mathematics, computer science and scientific or engineering applications. CSE focuses on developing problem-solving methodologies and robust tools for numerical simulation. It offers students a chance to become part of the elite program of the Bavarian Graduate School of Computational Engineering (BGCE).

The Master program in Applied Computational Mechanics contributes decisively to shortening and optimizing product development cycles in many fields of industry and research. This saves both time and money, which would have been spent on cost-intensive test runs, without sacrificing product quality. As the use of this discipline continues to expand within companies, the demand for professionals with further expertise in this field expands accordingly as well. Career prospects in this field includes Simulation Engineer, Product Development Engineer, Calculation Engineer. This program is in cooperation with University of Applied Sciences Landshut. Students are expected to complete course of study in THI and University of Applied Sciences Landshut.

Simulation Based Engineering

The International Master program in Distributed Systems Engineering focuses on Advanced topics in the area of distributed systems. There is a special emphasis on designing and building software system architectures including network, database, and secure systems. The objective of the Master program is to provide an Advanced training and prepare students for a future career in the very broad and rapidly developing field of distributed systems and their applications.  Career prospects include application developer, a security consultant, or as a compliance consultant.

The Semester contributions totaling 290.30 EUR must be paid each semester. It includes Student Union fee 87.50 EUR, Student Council and Student Representation fee 7.60 EUR and Semester Ticket fee 195.20 EUR

Distributed Systems Engineering

EMerald is a Master programme organised by four European Universities – University of Liège (ULiège), University of Lorraine (UL), Luleå University of Technology (LTU) and Technische Universität Bergakademie Freiberg (TUBAF). The programme is designed to focus on the following major aspects of Resources Engineering, Characterisation, Processing, Modelling and Management. The EMerald Master Programme has been designed to find the right balance between knowledge of resources (geology, landfills, urban mines, reserve characterisation and modelling) and process engineering techniques (comminution, sorting, preconcentration, extractive metallurgy and waste disposal). 

It is mandatory to do an internship. It is easier to find internship when it is mandatory. 3-6 months is most common.

EMerald Master in Resources Engineering

The Functional Advanced Materials and Engineering Master programme is based on and existing Erasmus Mundus program. The new FAME+ programme involves the same 7 European high level universities (Grenoble INP, TU Darmstadt, U. Aveiro, U. Augsburg, U. Bordeaux, U. Liège, U.C Louvain) from 4 countries (France, Germany, Belgium, Portugal) and provides a broad coverage of different education systems in Europe together with the way to integrate them in a large educational and industrial community.  Students start in one of two partner universities (Grenoble INP, France; TU Darmstadt, Germany) for the first year, then move on to other partner university for the second year.

Functional Advanced Materials and Engineering

Data Science combine skills in Mathematics, Computer Science, Statistics and specific knowledge in an application domain. The Master programme is research oriented and should enable students to carry out scientific research projects autonomously. Moreover students are taught how to communicate their insights and reflect on the ethical impacts of collecting and analysing large amounts of data as well as the consequences of automated data driven decision making. Students  can choose between Computational Neuroscience, Bioinformatics, Medical Data Science and Digital Humanities as domains.

Master Programme in Physics provides the opportunity to work with internationally renowned scientists on highly topical issues in basic and applied research. The interaction between light and matter, quantum dynamics and control, nanostructures, laboratory astrophysics, magnetic layers and surface physics are the main research topics.
